Comma powers new FIA Formula 2 Championship
09/07/2009
Comma will sponsor and provide vital technical support when the official FIA Formula 2 Championship returns to the European motorsport calendar in May after an absence of 25 years.
At a time of economic belt-tightening, the FIA F2 championship has been re-introduced by the governing body of world motor sport to provide aspiring Formula 1 drivers with an affordable stepping stone to World Championship competition at a cost per entrant of less than £200,000 for the entire 16 race series.
All 24 cars in the championship, run by ex-F1 racer Jonathan Palmer's MotorSport Vision (MSV), will run exclusively on products supplied by Comma, including engine oils and coolants, brake fluid and maintenance products.
Since 2007, Comma has been technical partner to MSV's world renowned PalmerSport driving facility at Bedford Autodrome, as well as the company's Formula Palmer Audi (FPA) race series and other driving experiences at MSV venues Brands Hatch and Oulton Park. These existing partnerships will continue, while the new FIA F2 alliance will mark Comma's move into the higher echelons of international motor racing.
"Comma has been involved in front line motorsport for many years with considerable success," said Comma Marketing & Sales Director Mike Bewsey.
Our link with Jonathan Palmer and MSV has proven that our products can withstand severe and sustained punishment, with over 2.2 million trouble-free miles a year run in a variety of high performance and racing cars across MSV's activities."
"But the F2 car, which has been designed by Patrick Head and the Williams F1 team, is another proposition again. It's a serious, top-level racing car, which means it needs the very best lubricants and chemicals to keep it running at optimum performance. Our relationship with F2 will underline our promise to professional workshop technicians that they can trust and specify Comma's products with confidence and, in turn, recommend them to their customers."
The new FIA Formula 2 championship will be contested on some of the most famous racing venues in Europe, including the F1 circuits at Spa in Belgium, and Barcelona in Spain. Most of the races will be staged at race meetings alongside the World Touring Car Championship, and Eurosport will carry live television coverage of all 16 events in the series. The season will start at the Spanish Valencia circuit on 31 May.
